Pictured are Harry Wieder (second from left), Judy Heumann (third from left), and Justin Dart Jr. (in hat and tie). The march ran annually for several years before evolving into the Disability Pride Parade in 2015.
Alt Text:
Black and white photograph of the front line of a march under a banner reading, “‘Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.’ Martin Luther King. Jr.” The crowd fills a city street hemmed on each side with skyscrapers.
Extended Description:
Most of the people in the front row use wheelchairs. Judy Heumann smiles and wears a baseball cap and glasses. She uses a motorized wheelchair and leans slightly to the person next to her, Harry Wieder, to our left. Harry has achondroplasia, a type of dwarfism, and wears sunglasses as he smiles widely at the camera. He holds a dossier or folder in both hands. Justin Dart Jr. sits in a manual wheelchair near the right edge of the photograph. He wears a fedora, suit, and tie, as he looks off into the distance with the corners of his mouth turned down. Many others behind this front line use wheelchairs and others walk. The sky is a washed-out bright sliver between the tall buildings. We look slightly up at the marchers.
